Colorful Creations (Ages 9–12: MORNING)

Discover the secrets of color theory, master the art of color mixing, and express your unique self through a variety of mediums, all while crafting dazzling masterpieces. Chime in! (Ages 9–12: AFTERNOON; Two weeks)

Fuel your curiosity and imagination in the clay studio at Virginia MOCA! In this two-week-long ceramics camp, we’ll go on a sensory journey as we create a variety of sound-makers with clay! From hanging wind chimes that harmonize with our surroundings, to fruit-themed shakers and tabletop mini chimes, every masterpiece crafted during this camp will reveal the transformative magic of the ceramic process. All finished works will be kiln-fired and glazed to ensure their durability.

In this two-week-long ceramics camp, we’ll explore the art of throwing clay on a potter’s wheel. To start, we’ll dive into the foundations of wheelwork, mastering wedging, centering clay, and shaping cylinders, cups, and bowls. Then, we’ll finish off our works with vibrant glazing techniques to add color and embellishments, as well as to ensure the watertightness of our forms for holding foods and liquids. Together, we’ll experience the wonder of the ceramic process as we combine hand skills and science to transform mud into exquisite works of art that will last for centuries!

WEEK 4, JULY 15–19

Exploring the Ocean Floor (Ages 9–12: MORNING)

Coral, crabs, and clams, oh my! Together, we’ll look to contemporary artists who are inspired by the ocean floor and discover life beneath the ocean’s surface. Young artists will learn to create sculptures with clay, combine a variety of media to produce works on paper, experiment with resist-dyeing techniques, and sew their own pillows.

Crochet All Day! (Ages 9–12: AFTERNOON)

Get hooked on crochet and fall in love with the wonderful world of fiber art! Together, we’ll find comfort and relaxation through the rhythmic joy of crochet, while also experimenting with different fiber activities including quilting, surface design, and needle felting. WEEK 5, JULY 22–26

On the Record (Ages 9–12: MORNING)

Let’s engage with traditional architectural and design tools like protractors, rulers, French curves, and various stencil palettes to create unique geometric designs! Together, we’ll draw inspiration from album cover art, architecture, science, technology, engineering, math, and murals as we master tools, work out our ideas on paper, and transfer our final designs onto 12-inch vinyl records with paint and paint pens for a unique way to display our new skills.

Clay Studio (Ages 9–12: MORNING; Two weeks)

Fuel your imagination and curiosity in the clay studio at Virginia MOCA! Together, we’ll learn how to create simple ceramic forms, uncover the wonder of the ceramic process, and have fun while making clay animals, pots, and more! In this two-week-long camp, we’ll learn all about clay, including hand-building, attaching, an introduction to the potter’s wheel, and even the ceramic firing process. All finished works will be glazed, kiln fired, and treasured for years to come.

Create your own hand-drawn animated short video! Together, we’ll discover the basics of storytelling and animation as we learn how to sequence drawings into a cohesive storyline and combine them into a short film. Drawing and Nature Journals (Ages 9–12: AFTERNOON)

Learn to observe and document your ideas and environment! Create a hand-made sketchbook with pages perfect for sketching in all media, and begin the journey of beautifully illustrating your everyday life and the nature that surrounds you. In this comprehensive introduction to sketchbook-keeping, we’ll learn how to bind our own books, discover tips and techniques for illustrating our own visually striking journal entries, and engage with watercolor to add color and texture to our drawings!
