Week 1, June 22–26
Instructor: MG Vandervelde
What can we create from everyday scraps? Together, we’ll hunt for interesting paper bits, tear and cut shapes, glue bold layers, doodle details, and build a one-of-a-kind journal page by page. We’ll crumple, stamp, tape, and decorate as we turn “junk” into colorful stories and surprising designs. At the end of the week, we’ll share our favorite pages before heading home with our one-of-a-kind visual journals!

Discover the wild side of creativity and bring animals to life through drawing, painting, sculpture, and storytelling. Together, we’ll fill sketchbooks with adventures, create self-portraits inspired by animal traits, build habitat dioramas, and learn to combine art and science in exciting ways!

Get hands-on with clay and connect with nature in this exciting two-week camp! Together, we’ll explore the stages of the ceramic process, create functional and decorative pottery, and draw inspiration from the great outdoors. We’ll craft dishes to use, design decorative wall hangings, and experiment on the potter’s wheel before glazing our pieces with bright colors and expressive surface treatments.
Finished artworks will be kiln- and glaze-fired, and families will be notified when pieces are ready for pickup.

Bring characters and stories to life one frame at a time in this imaginative animation camp! Design and build your own sets and characters using clay, wire, fabric, and found objects, then use photography and simple animation tools to create the illusion of motion on screen! Every camper can expect to leave with their handmade characters, sketches, and props. Families will also receive a digital file of the final class animation.

Hand-make your own book, then dive into illustration techniques using printmaking, pen-and-ink, and vibrant watercolors! Together, we’ll sketch from observation, capture moments from our day, and turn real-life experiences into creative visual stories. As we experiment with line, texture, and color, we’ll sharpen our drawing skills, strengthen media control, and grow more confident as imaginative illustrators and book artists. Campers will leave with a hand-made book full of unique artworks in all kinds of media.

Gather, deconstruct, and reimagine everyday objects to create unique mixed media masterpieces! Campers will dive into a variety of techniques, including drawing, painting, fiber art, and collage to explore the endless possibilities of combining different materials. Together, we’ll learn about contemporary artists and experiment with how to transform the ordinary into extraordinary. Through layering textures, adding vibrant colors, and integrating unusual elements, campers will use mixed media to create 2D and 3D artworks like stuffies, magnets, and more!

Explore traditional fiber-craft techniques in this hands-on camp! Together, we’ll learn how to transform wool into vibrant, textured designs as we practice making fiber art masterpieces through wet felting, needle felting, and punch needling. From shaping 3D figures and designing colorful wall hangings to creating fun accessories, campers will discover the joy of expressing themselves through the art of fiber!

Dip into the world of fiber arts! Together, we’ll discover the secrets of crochet as we learn how to read patterns, create different chains and stitches, and bring our own designs to life. Then, we’ll add a colorful twist by dyeing our finished pieces, learning to experiment with color gradients and vibrant effects. We will also explore how natural fibers are made, how they break down, and even uncover the science behind soda ash and dye reactions!

Step into the shoes of a city maker! Campers will learn about fundamentals in urban planning, creating town essentials like houses, schools, parks, and more using mixed recycled materials like paint, buttons, cardboard, and clay. Through teamwork, communication, and compromise, campers will end the week having created a bustling city, exploring city planning, architecture, and design in an array of interesting landscapes!

Create cool, winter-inspired art in the heat of summer! Together, we’ll explore a range of 2D and 3D media as we imagine frosty landscapes, snowy adventures, and icy textures. We’ll build evergreen trees from yarn, sculpt favorite winter activities in papier-mâché, and paint our own winter landscape masterpieces. By the end of the week, campers will have a collection of imaginative artworks that bring a little chill to summer days.

Investigate science through art! This week, we’ll explore the wonders of nature through art and discovery using tools like microscopes and nature apps. Campers will find and explore patterns in the world around us, drawing inspiration from science, art, and math to experiment in drawing, printmaking, and collage. Together, we’ll create unique works of art inspired by the beauty of nature, combining scientific curiosity with artistic expression.

Explore artmaking in the third dimension through fun experiments with texture, form, and space! Together, we’ll use clay to build a vessel, experiment with carving, try our hands at papier mâché puppetry, and create stunning wind chimes with wire and beads. With 3D art, we’ll build our confidence to push art past the second dimension with an array of fun, engaging projects!

Step into the studio and discover the art and science of glass! In this hands-on camp, we’ll practice essential glass safety, learn to score and cut glass with confidence, and design colorful creations like suncatchers and small plates. As we experiment with shape, pattern, and layered color, we’ll also explore how glass kilns use heat to fuse separate pieces into one finished work. By the end of camp, you’ll take home your own kiln-fired glass art and a deeper understanding of this exciting medium.

Explore the basics of animation and learn how to bring drawings to life! From sketch to screen, we’ll discover how to turn our ideas into fun, hand-drawn animations that move. With hands-on activities and expert instruction, we’ll create our very own short, animated film while gaining new skills with easy-to-use tools and software. Campers will walk away with their original drawings as well as receive a digital file of the class animations.

Together, we’ll explore fabric, color, and texture as we design and construct magical hats and capes, cardboard armor, and imaginative accessories. Let’s draw and print together! In this camp, we’ll explore fun ways to mix drawing and printmaking using pencils, markers, ink, and more. We’ll try exciting techniques like monoprinting, learn to make your own stamps, and practice working in layers to add interest and color to our work. By the end of the week, campers will take home colorful prints, sketchbook pages, and one-of-a-kind drawings to display and share!

Throw yourself into pottery and learn the foundations of wheel throwing! In this two-week camp, we’ll practice essential ceramic techniques while building confidence and strong studio habits. From wedging and centering to pulling walls and shaping forms, we’ll work hands-on with raw clay and learn to use studio tools and equipment safely and effectively. We’ll also explore glazing methods that add vibrant color and rich surface detail to finished pieces.
All materials are included, and no prior ceramics experience is required. Finished artworks will be kiln- and glaze-fired, and families will be notified when pieces are ready for pickup.

Experiment with color, texture, and design as we transform fabric into bold, wearable art! In this hands-on camp, we’ll paint custom patches, design and apply vinyl using heat-transfer techniques, carve and print our own stamps, and use fabric spray paint to build layered textures and patterns. Working with both new and recycled materials, we’ll explore how fabric can be reimagined through creative reuse. By the end of camp, you’ll have a collection of original textile pieces that showcase your personal style and inventive thinking.

Watch your paint swirl, splash, and sweep across the page! In this energetic camp, we will explore watercolor and acrylic paint, creating colorful landscapes full of movement and feeling. Through playful experiments with brushstrokes, color mixing, layering, and a few unexpected tools, we’ll learn how to show action and flow in 2D artwork. Together, we will strengthen our fine motor skills, build our art foundations, and gain confidence with the brush as we create bold, dynamic paintings full of life!

Together, we’ll get inspired by the art of making something from nothing, inventing and building our own creative tools like paper, custom sketchbooks, custom-mixed paints, and painting tools. From pulping and pressing to painting and binding, each project encourages campers’ problem-solving, creative thinking, resourcefulness, and curiosity while strengthening fine motor skills to create art completely from scratch!
