WEEK 1, JUNE 24–28
Coil Me Crazy (Ages 6–8: MORNING; Two weeks)

Instructor: Renee Calway

In this two-week-long ceramics camp, we’ll explore the historic, creative, and cultural roots of coil-based ceramic artworks and discover how a coil of clay can be the starting point for endless creative possibilities. Together, we’ll learn to hand-build functional vessels, characters, planters, and more before adding texture, glazes, and exciting accessories to our ceramic sculptures.

All artworks finished during this camp will be kiln-fired, glazed, and treasured for years to come!

Papermaking (Ages 6–8: AFTERNOON)

Instructor: Jessica Folck

Join us for a week of sensory discovery and hands-on exploration as we learn all about making paper from scratch! Together, we’ll try our hand at using traditional and recycled materials, found objects, and plant life to create our own uniquely textured papers. We’ll also learn how to attach our papers to make simple sketchbooks, experiment with adding artistic media like paint and collage, and practice sculpting with leftover paper pulp!

Build it! (Ages 6–8: AFTERNOON) 

Instructor: James O’Connor

Build sculptures inspired by architecture such as castles, bridges, towers, and beyond! Experiment with a wide variety of media while you discover sculpture techniques, experiment with textures, and learn how to balance and support your designs. Together, we’ll use wood, glue, string, paint, and more to construct our ideas in the third dimension!

Flora and Fauna (Ages 6–8: MORNING)

Explore the variety of plants and animals that exist in the world around us through art! Together, we’ll experiment with a range of artistic media and sharpen our sculpting and drawing skills as we create watercolor resist drawings, mixed-media collages, model magic sculptures, and found object assemblages. Get ready for an immersive mosaic experience where young artists will use natural materials like stones, shells, and pebbles to create simple and colorful mosaics arranged into unique designs. Together, we’ll explore the wonders of their various shapes, colors, and textures and learn to attach and seal these treasures into one cohesive artwork of our own! Throughout this process, we’ll develop a greater appreciation for the beauty of nature and how it can be transformed into art as we practice the foundational skills of material selection, designing and planning, and finishing works for presentation!

Stop-motion animation is a filmmaking technique that makes physical objects appear to move on their own. Together, we’ll hand-build and manipulate our own sets and characters using clay, wire, fabric, and more to bring our ideas to life in this interactive and experimental art camp!
