Let’s learn to observe the world around us like artists and scientists do best! Together, we’ll use microscopes, lenses, and binoculars as we document our findings in research journals and produce works of art based on what we see. Throughout the week, young artists will delve into scientific illustration, investigate how to accurately draw humans and animals, take field notes, and create observational sketches.

Printmaking 101 (CAMP FULL)

Printmaking is the artistic process of transferring an image from one surface to another, often allowing the artist to easily make multiples. Together, we’ll learn a variety of printmaking techniques and create prints on a variety of surfaces such as paper, found images, and fabrics. Young artists will walk away with multiple printed artworks plus newfound confidence in this exciting and useful art form!

With the powers of creativity and ingenuity in their toolbelt, artists can turn ordinary objects and subjects into extraordinary works of art. Together, we’ll practice transforming everyday items like yarn, beans, salt, and flour, into exciting sculptures, dazzling mosaics, and more!

The Language of Art (CAMP FULL)

Instructor: Elijah Chumley
Play with shape, line, value, texture, and color to communicate your creative ideas! Through a variety of exciting projects and experiments, you’ll learn to combine the elements of art as if they were their own language. By the end of the week, you’ll have a sketchbook full of inspiration and a large artwork that integrates your new skills.

Stop-motion animation is a filmmaking technique that makes objects appear to move on their own. Hand-build and manipulate your own sets and characters to bring your ideas to life in this interactive and experimental art camp. On top of keeping their awesome sculptures, young artists will also receive a video of the class animations to keep for years to come.

Journey into the depths of flora and fauna in the natural world! Young artists will identify the residents of various habitats as we explore forests, grasslands, wetlands, and marine ecosystems. Together, we’ll learn about structure and color through clay hand-building and glazing as we sculpt and decorate detailed plants and animals.

The Third Dimension (CAMP FULL)

Explore the third dimension through texture, form, and negative space! Young artists will use clay to build a vessel and experiment with carving, try their hands at paper maché to make a puppet with personality, and manifest color and sound with wire and beads to create a stunning sun chime.

Get ready for a week of Earth exploration where you will learn about extreme environments like outer space, the deep sea, and rainforests. Use a variety of materials to interpret these unique spaces as we draw, paint, collage, and sculpt our way through the week. Gain a better understanding of our world, learn more about Earth-conscious art practices, and have fun while doing it!

Instructor: Elizabeth Tumilty
Lean into experimental art processes as you learn to paint with a range of materials and tools to create your own paper for unique collage art! Young artists will use a variety of instruments and painting media to add texture and color to different types of paper before learning how to cut, arrange, and attach the pieces together to create a final masterpiece of a collaged subject on a painted background.

Build sculptures inspired by architecture such as castles, bridges, towers, and more! Experiment with a wide variety of media while you discover sculpture techniques, experiment with textures, and learn how to balance and support your designs.

Instructor: Renee Calway
Get hands-on ceramics experience and engage the senses by experimenting with the different states of clay! Learn to revive and reclaim dry clay, and practice using clay at various levels of moisture content. Together, we’ll use liquid clay to pour slip into molds, pinch forms for pots and sculptures, add details with the score and slip process, and more.

Use felt, fabric, and other fibers to create unique sculptures and stuffies inspired by the natural world. Together, we’ll spend time outside gathering ideas and making sketches, then we’ll take our concepts back to the studio where we’ll learn to use a variety of different soft-sculpture media to bring our final works of art to life!

Engage with a variety of painting styles, tools, and techniques as we learn to create with watercolor and acrylic paint. Young artists will gain confidence in the use of two different paint mediums and practice great studio habits as they work both collaboratively and independently to produce exciting and unique paintings in the form of still lives, portraits, abstract artworks, and more!
