What is Zoom and how does it work?
Zoom is one of the most popular video conferencing services online and many educational institutions use this platform for classes. You will not need a Zoom account to take your class, you will simply join the meeting from the link sent to you after registrations have been finalized.

Having trouble accessing your class? Please email with a detailed description of your problem and our team will reach out to help as soon as we are able.

What can I expect from an online class?

Online classes are held through Zoom, a free online conferencing program that allows instructors and students to see and speak to each other. Our online classes are designed to be engaging, interactive and as similar as possible to the classes you may have taken before in our studios. MOCA Studio School instructors have worked hard to create engaging content like demonstrations, guided step-by-step projects, discussions, presentations, and critiques.

How do I join my online class?

When your registration is confirmed, you will receive a confirmation email 2-3 business days before your class start date, you will receive a second email which will include a Zoom URL and a password, along with an expanded Zoom instruction document for reference. All MOCA classes will have passwords to increase security. The link will take you to your classroom during the scheduled class times. Use the same link for all sessions of the class if you are enrolled in a multi-week class. You can bookmark this link on your internet browser and click on it each week when it’s time for class. This link will only work after your instructor has started the meeting, so please don’t join early.

Make sure that the Zoom application is installed, and double check your audio and video settings before the beginning of your class. You will be prompted to install the application when you click the meeting link if you have not already done so. During the scheduled time of your class, simply click the provided URL: a browser window will open and ask permission to open Zoom. Approve the request, enter your password when prompted, enable video and audio when prompted, then you will be taken directly to your class.

What do I do if my child is taking an online class?

Classes for youth and family audiences will require an adult to help gather materials, log in to the class and help the student signoff and clean up materials. Content for youth classes has been specifically created to work for the entire 6-12 age group, so projects will work well for homes with multiple children. This class series includes an initial major instruction period, independent offline work time, and show-and-tell style wrap-up section after students have created their projects for each class day.

How available is the instructor? Will there be time for individual instruction or meetings after class time?

Class structure is dependent on the teaching style of the instructor. Some instructors may have more critique-oriented classes, while others may be demonstration based. Respect the instructor’s decision and respect your fellow classmates if the instructor organizes one-on-one conversations by muting your audio.

Our instructors are only available during their scheduled Zoom meeting class times. Please ask any questions that you have during this time and respect the instructor’s boundaries. Instructors are not expected to set up additional meetings outside of their scheduled class and are not able to do so on their Zoom accounts.

What are we doing to keep our Zoom meetings safe?

We take the security of our students seriously and have taken the necessary steps to prevent “Zoom bombing” or other unwanted guests from entering your classroom. All links are accompanied with a randomly generated password unique to your class. You will also be directed to a waiting room upon joining the meeting. From there, your instructor can allow authorized students to enter the classroom. Please do not share your link or password with others. In the event that somebody manages to get through these measures, your instructor does have the ability to remove that person from the classroom.
