Saggar Firing Workshop - Day 1

Day 1: Sat, Nov 7 | 10:30AM – 12:30PM
Day 2: Sun, Nov 8 | 11AM-12PM

*Rain Date November 14 & 15

Members $70, Non-members $85

Saggar Firing is a low-fire technique, using an outdoor kiln, to give your pottery surfaces exciting splashes of orange, peach and pink colors along with smoky grays. Students will arrange a combination of combustible materials, packed around bisque fired pottery. During firing, the materials within the saggar combust and can yield a range of unexpected colors and surface designs. Saggar fired pieces will not be watertight or functional for food use. Student must bring an 8-inch terracotta planter and tray, and one bisque fired pottery piece (or several small pieces) that will fit inside the planter which will serve as a saggar.  Please see supply list for additional recommendation and optional materials. The workshop will be held outdoors at Virginia MOCA, so please check the weather and dress comfortably. All students will be required to wear a face mask as well as maintain social distance in accordance with MOCA safety guidelines. If there is inclement weather predicted, MOCA staff will reach out and confirm that class will be moved to the rain dates listed above.

Virginia MOCA offers distanced bisque firings through the Ceramics at Home program. When dropping off your work that you intend to use for the Saggar Workshop, please make a note to MOCA staff so that we can do our best to make sure your work is bisque fired in time.
