New Waves 2020¬

March 21, 2020-January 3, 2021

This year Virginia MOCA celebrates the 25th anniversary of the juried New Waves exhibition of work by Virginia artists. The Commonwealth is home to a vast array of artistic talent, and Virginia MOCA takes pride in its commitment to highlighting and honoring this artistic community. The Museum offers special thanks to Juror Susan Thompson and the artists who submitted entries to New Waves 2020. The 29 works presented were selected from the more than 1,500 entered for consideration, with artists from throughout the Commonwealth.

Susan Thompson is Associate Curator at the Guggenheim Museum, where she has curated several exhibitions including the two-part project Implicit Tensions: Mapplethorpe Now (2019–20); Simone Leigh, Loophole of Retreat (2019); Anicka Yi, Life Is Cheap (2017); Paul Chan, Nonprojections for New Lovers (2015). She has also contributed to such exhibitions as Danh Vo: Take My Breath Away (2018); Photo-Poetics: An Anthology (2015–16), and Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video (2014).

We invite you to take part in this year’s exhibition by voting for your favorite artwork in ARTlab.
