THE REST OF HISTORY¬
MARCH 23, 2019–AUGUST 18, 2019
The Rest of History brings to light untold stories of figures and key moments in history. Five contemporary artists, Gina Adams, Andrea Geyer, Fabiola Jean-Louis, Mary Reid Kelley, and Charles Williams challenge complex social, political and personal histories. They invite viewers to join a larger conversation about pertinent issues we face in our own time.
A common adage is "history is written by the victors." This means a narrow group of people control production of history. Those with power commission art, approve textbooks, and control the making of books, movies and television programs. The result is a limited viewpoint of history bounded by gender, ethnicity, and class. It is also what defines our values and community. Because of this, society suffers a great loss.
This exhibition aims to expand that viewpoint to reveal many stories and points of view. History is a broad, rich, complicated banquet with enough room for everyone at the table. Join the conversation and help us explore the rest of history.
The Rest of History is organized by the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art and curated by Alison Byrne, Director of Exhibitions and Education and Heather Hakimzadeh, Curator. It is generously underwritten by Capital Group.
