Now in their 98th year, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for young artists and writers in grades 7–12. This exhibition, presented in partnership with Virginia MOCA, showcases a collection of award-winning art and writing from the 2021 edition of the Scholastic Awards, including selected recipients of the American Visions award— our highest regional honor—and a special selection of poetry from the Class of 2021 National Student Poets.
This exhibition provides a fascinating sampling of the issues and ideas that are on the minds of teens today. Students in the exhibition demonstrate excellence in all manner of art techniques, from traditional drawing and painting to digital art and animation. Works of award-winning writing are included in the anthology Best Teen Writing 2021, which is free for visitors to take.
In 2021, nearly 230,000 works were entered into the Awards’ 28 categories of art and writing by students from every state in the nation.
