The Boardwalk Art Show is a Virginia Beach tradition that has been running for 67 years. Organized by the Virginia MOCA, the show began in the early 1950s as a way to raise money for a local artist who had suffered a stroke. Some fellow artists organized an art sale to help. The event was so successful that they decided to do more and to start one on the beach every summer. The show quickly grew in popularity, eventually becoming the well-known festival that it is today. The local arts community formalized and evolved to become the Museum we are today.
Virginia MOCA is proud to celebrate the history of the Boardwalk Art Show with a special poster show. Featuring a selection of posters from the show's early years along with original artwork and photographs, the display demonstrates the show’s evolving style and the special place it holds in the cultural community of Virginia Beach. Together, the images are a slice of local history that reflects and celebrates the place we call home.
