Learn the fundamentals of drawing and painting to create a realistic oil portrait using the alla prima technique! Walk step-by-step through the portrait painting process alongside Made in VA artist Ken García Oláes. We'll begin by practicing line drawing and composition from a reference image before establishing value in our portraits through underpainting. The class will also delve into color theory, oil transfers, working in layers, and various brushwork techniques to achieve finely rendered, captivating results.

Ken García Oláes holds a BFA from VCU majoring in Medical Illustration and minoring in Biology. He later studied with Living Master Robert Liberace and was awarded a scholarship to The Florence Academy of Art in New York in 2015 to study Academic Drawing. He continues his research at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk as a master copyist and teaches private lessons within the galleries. He specializes in the understanding of artistic anatomy with a classic Michelangelo-esque style of drawing and a contemporary approach to the Venetian Method of oil painting.
