Photographers, by their very nature, are collectors. Whether making images of birds or sunsets or people, photographers use their cameras to collect the things they notice about their lives. In this multi-week class, students will become archaeologists of their own work. Using weekly prompts as well as exploring the themes that already exist within their camera rolls, students will unearth the motifs, ideas, and subjects that make up the work they create.
Through lectures, class discussion and homework assignments, students will explore what makes a collection and apply those ideas to their own work. By the end of the series, students will have curated a collection of images that can stand alone in their own right or which can be used as a jumping off point for future creative projects. This class is designed for all skill levels and all cameras, and even beginning photographers will develop a greater understanding of the kinds of images they love to create. Students should bring a camera (or phone) to class as well as a notebook and pen for taking notes.
