Join From Here exhibiting artist Vivian Chiu for a master class inspired by her artistic practice. Chiu creates intricate wood sculptures that explore the relationships between material, craft, memory, place, and identity.

Double-bevel marquetry is a technique that involves cutting two layers of wood veneer at an angle, allowing the pieces to fit together to create an intricate image or pattern.

Through discussion in the galleries and hands-on practice in the studios, Chiu will introduce participants to the fundamentals of double-bevel marquetry using a scroll saw. Students will learn how to design or trace a pattern, select wood veneers, and use a scroll saw to cut and assemble a simple marquetry image. By the end of the class, participants will create a small marquetry panel, 8.5 × 11 inches or smaller.

This class is suitable for beginners who are comfortable working with saw blades and have steady hand-eye coordination.

There will be a 30-minute lunch break, so please bring a bagged lunch.

Level: Beginner-friendly; some comfort working with saw blades recommended
