Teaching Artist: Rachel “RJ” Jaffe
Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Get inspired by the art in our galleries, and learn to throw vessel forms on the pottery wheel with guidance from an expert instructor.

Designed for beginner and intermediate students, this hands-on class combines demonstrations with individualized guidance on the pottery wheel. Students will practice foundational techniques like centering and pulling walls to create simple bowl forms, with opportunities to explore taller and more complex vase forms as their skills develop. Working at their own pace, participants will create vessel forms inspired by the exhibitions on view in the Virginia MOCA galleries.

Class discussions will explore the anatomy of a vessel, function, visual balance, surface design, and personal voice.

All materials are provided. Finished artworks will be kiln- and glaze-fired, and participants will be notified when their pieces are ready for pickup.

Now presented in Virginia MOCA's new purpose-built home, the Made in VA Biennial enters its next chapter.
