“SIMON AND THE OAKS” is based on the Swedish bestseller novel of the same name, written by Marianne Fredriksson. The film is a 2011 Swedish drama film, directed by Lisa Ohlin and starring Bill Skarsgård. It offers a unique depiction of fate, destiny and free will and vividly portrays the situation for Jews in Sweden during World War II.
“SIMON AND THE OAKS“, has received a record 13 nominations for the 2012 Sweden’s Guldbagge Awards (the local equivalent of the Oscars), including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Cinematography. A major commercial success in its native Sweden, the film went on to gross over $4 million at the Swedish box office.
Not only is the film an attraction; this year, our special guest Colonel Hans Granlund, the highest ranked Swedish military officer, living in Virginia Beach, will speak about Sweden’s position in the second world war before the film. Returning is also the Swedish Consul of Norfolk, Mr. Rolf Williams. MOCA has 268 seats and our goal is to fill each one.
SWEA is a non-profit global association with more than 7500 members and our mission is to promote Swedish culture and tradition. We have carefully selected this drama as our second film because it is entertaining as well as educational with beautiful scenes from the archipelago in Gothenburg, Sweden.
