Virginia MOCA proudly celebrates its 24th juried exhibition, New Waves 2019. MOCA is honored to support Virginia’s contemporary artists. The Commonwealth holds a broad scope of artistic talent, only which a small portion is highlighted in this exhibition. MOCA would like to thank our juror, Carmen Hermo and all the artists who submitted entries.

About the Juror:

Carmen Hermo is the Associate Curator for the Brooklyn Museum’s Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art. She curated the exhibition Roots of “The Dinner Party”: History in the Making, and co-curated exhibitions Half the Picture: A Feminist Look at the Collection and Something to Say: Brooklyn Hi-Art! Machine, Deborah Kass, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, and Hank Willis Thomas. Additionally, she co-organized Marilyn Minter: Pretty/Dirty (2016–17) and Radical Women: Latin American Art, 1960-1985 (2018).  Previously, she was Assistant Curator for Collections at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (2010–16). She has worked with the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art. Carmen received her B.A. in Art History and English from the University of Richmond and is pursuing an M.A. in Art History at Hunter College.
