Recurring characters are staples of mysteries and thrillers; they’re also the foundation of connected short story collections. Using MOCA’s current exhibition, The Nexus: Selections from the Chrysler Museum as a springboard for our discussion, we’ll engage in an informal study of adaption in fiction. How do we create characters who change and evolve? When do we push them to the center of a plot, and when should they exist only in the periphery? For the first few sessions, we'll look at how characters have reappeared in other writers' work. Then, in the second half of the class, we'll try our hand at adapting our own characters from one setting or invention into another.
