General Information
The primary focus of the event is the juried exhibition of gallery quality fine art. Additionally, the Boardwalk Art Show offers live entertainment, cultural performances and outdoor food vending. The Boardwalk Art Show is a fundraiser and all proceeds are used by MOCA to provide thought-provoking, contemporary art exhibitions and children’s art education programs.

Attendance
The Boardwalk Art Show & Festival’s attendance is approximately 200,000 persons each year. Marketing is directed toward a diverse audience of individuals likely to be interested in the visual arts. While the majority of the audience is from the Virginia Beach area, a significant and increasing number of art patrons from Richmond and beyond attend.

Jury Process
Approximately 270 artists will exhibit at the 2012 event. A total of 90 artists have been invited to return. A potential of 190 exhibit slots will be determined through the competitive jury process.
Images are reviewed by jurors in a blind jury online process in the first round. The identities of artists are not disclosed to jurors. The jury is comprised of  one working artist and two art professionals. Each juror will view each artist's set of five images. The process, materials and dimensions for each image as well as artist information statements are made available to the jury. Artistic excellence and a well balanced show are the criteria for selection of exhibitors. Scores are averaged together. Top scoring artists are reviewed by the standards committee and 160 artists receive invitations. Artists scoring a 3.5 or higher are retained to comprise a waiting list of alternates. Decisions of the jury panel and standards committee are final.

Artist Awards
Judging for cash prizes takes place on Thursday, June 14th. Two jurors who are not exhibitors serve as judges. Artistic excellence is the criteria for selecting the awards. In the past a total of $32,000 is offered in artist awards. Prize money totals vary year to year and is yet to be determined. MOCA reserves the right to retain Best in Show.

Booth Space
Applications will be date stamped upon receipt. Artists desiring corner locations will be assigned spaces on a first-come, first served basis from the date their application is received. Each exhibitor will be provided a space measuring 10' deep by 11' wide. Artists are to provide their own display booth, racks and/or tables in order to display their work in an outdoor environment.

Sales
Artists retain all revenue from the sale of their work with no commission on sales due to the Arts Festival. 5% sales tax is due to Virginia Department of Taxation and we will give you that paperwork in your registration packet.

Collaborative Work / Multiple Applications
Artists must submit separate applications, unless applying as a team. If artists are accepted as a team they may only exhibit the collaborative work they were accepted for.

Artists wishing to exhibit work produced in more than one media category must create separate zapplication accounts with separate online user id's, set of digital images and jury fee for each category. Only one application may be submitted per body of work represented. Multiple applications must represent either work in different media categories or distinctly separate bodies of work within one category. No advantage is gained by submitting multiple applications for the same body of work in multiple categories.

Application Fees
Each application must be accompanied by the $30 jury fee payment. Applicants may choose to pay online by credit card, or they may pay by a check made payable to Virginia MOCA (mailed to 2200 Parks Avenue Virginia Beach, VA 23451). The non-refundable jury fee check will be deposited on receipt.

Booth Fees / Acceptance of Offer to Exhibit
An artist who is selected by the jury and accepts the invitation to exhibit, must pay for their assigned booth fee by April 1. Failure to respond by the deadline may result in revocation of the invitation and immediate invitation of an alternate from the waiting list.

Digital Images
- Five images are to be submitted for each application entered by the artist.
- Four images must be of individual pieces of work.
- The fifth image, must be of a display of the artist's work, showing overall continuity and presentation of your current body of work. The fifth image is mandatory. If a booth image per se is not available, submit an image taken of a grouping of works representative of the works to be exhibited at the show. The purpose of the booth image is to ensure the artist has a complete body of work which is represented both in the first four images and also within the fifth image. It also helps identify the scale of the artist's work. Note: this is a blind jury process, please avoid submitting booth images with any identifiable sign, or photo of the artist themselves. In addition, any work outside of the medium and context of the 4 images submitted that may appear in the booth shot would not be considered accepted by the jury, due to it's mere presence in the booth image. If artists have multiple bodies of work, MOCA encourages them to submit these in separate applications.
- For image size requirements visit http://www.zapplication.org/images.phtml
- Images must accurately represent the body of the artist's work to be exhibited at the Boardwalk Art Show.

Rules of the Show
1. All work must be original and made by hand. Artist guarantees the accuracy of the description of the works presented and the authenticity of the work as the creation of their own hands.
2. Work done by a production studio is not acceptable. All work must be designed and executed by the accepted artist.
3. No more than two artists may collaborate on work. Both must be included on and sign the application. Both must be present at the art show.
4. Artists must be present with their work for the entire four days of the art show. Representatives may not attend in place of the artist. BWAS requires photo identification at check-in to ensure compliance.
